Large Domestic Cat Breeds that make Great Family Pets

In the world of cats, there are good-natured varieties and more feisty breeds. There is also a great diversity in terms of sizes, shapes and colors. For some families that are on the hunt for a cat as a family pet, the idea of a larger cat is an attractive one. There are many large domestic cat breeds that can make enjoyable pets for a number of reasons. Three of the most popular large domestic cat breeds are the Maine Coon, the Ragamuffin and the Siberian.



The Maine Coon cat breed is quite a big animal and it is also full of energy and it may even weigh as many as twelve kilograms at the most, while the average weight for the Maine Coot is about between six and nine kilograms for the adult male, while the females weigh about half as much as the males. In fact, the male Maine Coot is known to have grown to as many as one meter in its length, though the longest known Maine Coot is a bit longer than that as well.

Another theory commonly associated with the emergence of the largest domestic cat breed is that the Maine Coon came from the six cats sent to Wiscasset, Maine by Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. While this theory has never been completely disregarded, the most commonly accepted belief today is that the Maine Coon breed is the offspring of shorthaired domestic cats and overseas longhairs.  These longhairs may have been brought to the United States by the Vikings or New England Seamen.
