Largest Domestic Cat Breed
Largest Domestic Cat Breed
The Maine Coon is known for being the largest domestic cat breed. Indeed, a widespread legend is that the Maine Coon is over 30 pounds! This is untrue (unless the cat is morbidly obese), but this large domestic cat is very tall and muscular with big bones. The male cat typically weight between 13 to 18 pounds, while the female weighs 9 to 12 pounds. With the addition of the cat’s thick coat of fur, it is no wonder that it is known for being the largest domestic cat breed!
For thousands of years cats have bred themselves quite well and have evolved from being used for hunting as well as for eliminating rodents and now cat breeds are the product of human intervention and they are meant to suit mankind’s own needs. Thus, it should not surprise you to learn that at present there are as many as seventy different cat breeds that are recognized through many different cat registries.
The Habari is a more recent addition to exotic cat breeds. The breed is unique in the sense that it was developed as a pet and they are a combination of wildcats' genes and other hybrids. Egyptian Maus are among the oldest domestic cats in the world and they are classified as an exotic cat breed because they have characteristics that place them as wildcats.
A factor to consider when choosing a cat breed for your home is the expense of feeding and grooming the cat. Cat food can be expensive and grooming services for longhairs can also be expensive, as with veterinarian services. Feeding your cat leftovers can be dangerous because some foods can be deadly for cats.
Despite their large (and perhaps intimidating) appearance, the Maine Coon is a very gentle cat with a sweet disposition. Although they are the largest domestic cat breed, they make great pets for anyone looking for a furry feline friend!
